Cleopatra
"Cléopâtre dans le miroir de l'art occidental" runs from the 25th of March to the 1st of August 2004 at Geneva's Musée Rath, one of Switzerland's premier art venues. Organised by the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Genève, this ambitious exhibition brings together over eighty paintings, sculptures, and engravings that explore the enduring myth of Cleopatra through art of the 15th to the 20th centuries. From manuscript illuminations of Boccaccio to Warhol's fascination with Elizabeth Taylor, the exhibition emphasizes iconographic differences and similarities; it encourages the visitor to think about how artists working at different historical moments and in various cultural contexts have formed, reformed, and even deformed images of Cleopatra to suit the myth-making imperatives of their time.
