MESSAGE:
Hello!I am doing my Diploma work on the art and life of J.W.Waterhouse!!Is there any link where I could find his influences gathered altogether?Thank you!
RESPONSES:
Hi,
Sorry, I don't know of any place where his influences are gathered together but (you may already know this) some of Nino's main influences were Jules Bastien-Lepage, Sir John Everett Millais and Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (there's plenty of info on the internet about them). I'm doing an essay on Waterhouse myself for college, so if I come across what you're looking for, I'll let you know. Good luck with the Diploma!
Kind regards,
Jim
I would suggest starting with the TATE Symposia article at http://www.johnwilliamwaterhouse.com/m/articles/50025/
. To flesh this info out my next suggestion would be to look up Waterhouse auction listings on Christies and use the informative material from a number of his paintings.
Much of what is in this material comes from Peter Trippi's books but there is a little extra material. To get a chronological feel for the influences I do suggest Trippi's books.
An extra source that I've found interesting is the Sketchley article of 1909 being an authorised view and unaffected by modern hypothesising it is some what closer to JWs own interpretation.
If you are looking for something new to add then I'd suggest you look at Lord Leighton's influence. Leighton's influence was considerable, in part through an uptake of his aesthetic style (not his painting style) but also through his support of movements such as Newlyn.
I'll try to put something together to help future students and put it online. But that will take some time.
Good luck.
Regards
Neil
Are you looking simply for the artistic influences, or for literary as well?
Ness
Neil mentioned Peter Trippi's
books, which would be the best sources of information.
The biography included in the recent exhibition catalogue can be found still online at the Montreal Museum of Fine Art website ...
John William Waterhouse: A Biographical Overview. This might be another good starting point as it gives a brief survey that includes some artistic and literary influences.
Best wishes,
Cathy
